The Ralph O’Connor Sustainable Energy Institute (ROSEI) does not offer degree programs, though many of ROSEI’s faculty are involved in programs that are closely related to sustainable energy in their home departments. In some cases, sustainable energy is one of many specialty topics available within a particular Master’s program. In other cases, sustainable energy is a primary focus. The following was prepared by ROSEI and should be viewed as general information only. Please contact the specific programs for complete details.

The type of master’s that is a best fit for you depends on:

  • Your interests and goals
  • Your desire primarily for full-time residential vs. part-time online instruction
  • Your undergraduate degree.

There are multiple paths you can choose while deciding how you’d like to further your education. You may want to continue with your undergraduate area and receive a Master’s in the specialty area you are most knowledgeable, but at the same time expand your focus to include sustainable energy topics. In most cases, the schools and departments at Hopkins in traditional subjects associated with energy offer courses and sometimes concentrations that allow for exactly this path. If, instead, you would rather focus on sustainable energy more exclusively, and want to indicate this directly in your masters program choice, then you have a more limited set of offerings. Keep in mind that eligibility for a particular master’s program is generally determined by your undergraduate degree with different offerings provided for undergraduates with degrees in arts (typically BA), science (typically BS), or engineering (typically an ABET accredited BS or BSE). Finally, Hopkins offers both in-person full-time residential master’s programs as well as largely online part-time master’s programs – this, too, will likely influence the program that is best for you.

Full-time (in-person) engineering degree programs with sustainable energy content

For students with bachelor’s degrees in engineering or science most of the departments in the Whiting School of Engineering (WSE) offer in-person master’s programs that have content relevant to sustainable energy. Requirements differ, but all include coursework and most include options for essay (thesis) or design (project). Programs can be completed in 1-2 years. Most programs offer a means that JHU undergraduates can take some courses during their Bachelor’s degree and some offer scholarships/benefits for JHU undergraduates that pursue these degrees. Students in these programs can also take courses from the online WSE EP program to further broaden their offerings. A small number of MS students in these programs are encouraged to continue to PhD studies – applicants should make the departments offering the program aware of this interest if it exists (some programs also offer direct to PhD programs for interested and qualified BS graduates). General information on WSE degrees is available here.

Part-time (online) engineering degree programs with sustainable energy content

For students with bachelor’s degrees in engineering or science most of the departments in the Whiting School of Engineering (WSE) offer part-time online master’s programs that have content relevant to sustainable energy. The degree programs focus largely on coursework with time to degree correlated with the number of courses taken per year. Many classes are taught by professionals working in the field of interest. General information on WSE Engineering for Professionals degrees is available here.
