The Ralph O’Connor Sustainable Energy Institute at Johns Hopkins University has released its 2025 Annual Report, highlighting a year of rapid growth, groundbreaking research, and expanding impact across the university and beyond.

“I’m immensely proud of how much ROSEI has evolved over the years, especially in the past year. It felt like the perfect time to create a publication that reflected and celebrated the institute’s growth,” said Ben Schafer, ROSEI’s director. “I encourage people at Hopkins and external to the university to read through the report and learn more about the work ROSEI has been doing, and how we will further expand.”

Now in its fourth year, ROSEI has solidified its position as the nexus of sustainable energy research and education at Hopkins. Readers will find features on cutting-edge research advancing clean energy technology, from electrochemical carbon capture systems and next-generation batteries to the launch of major research centers like Electric Power Innovation for a Carbon-free Society (EPICS) and the Academic Center for Reliability and Resilience of Offshore Wind (ARROW)

The report also highlights ROSEI’s growing role in shaping public policy, including its contributions to Maryland’s ambitious climate goals and leadership of multistate collaborations on interregional transmission planning. Education remains a cornerstone of ROSEI’s mission, with programs that span from high school to postdoctoral training—developing the next generation of energy innovators.

Beyond the lab, ROSEI’s events, such as the ARPA-E Innovation Summit and the annual ROSEI Research Summit, continue to expand the Hopkins energy community and foster collaboration across disciplines. The report closes with a preview of R.Labs, ROSEI’s forthcoming 12,000-square-foot research hub in Baltimore’s Remington neighborhood, slated to open in 2026.
